Research interests:

My research addresses the evolution of the near-surface of the ground under climate change. I base my research on the authorship method of integrating geophysical data from several different techniques (Seismic Tomography, Electrical Resistivity Tomography, Ground Penetrating Radar, and Reflection Imaging) to obtain a consistent and accurate ground model. In this methodology, the key is to analyze the uncertainty of the results, indispensable in the study of environmental variability. This makes it possible to visualize rapidly occurring changes, over a relatively short period (2-4 years).

The exact target of my research is the periglacial environment, especially the post-glacial areas. The research conducted on Spitsbergen was aimed at imaging the geological structures formed in this environment, as well as at determining the variability of the near-surface permafrost zone occurring in both the short (seasonal variability) and medium (observations over several years) time ranges. A special topic of my work is the evolution of permafrost in terms of not only the top but also the bottom of it. I try to use the experience gained in polar research in the domestic field. As a result of environmental observations, I noticed that in the landslides located in a mountainous area, several analogies with the results of polar research can be observed. One of them is the influence of climate changes and in particular the change in precipitation characteristics on the behavior of landslides. As in the case of permafrost, precipitation and its type and amount define the characteristics of the evolution of the shallow near-surface zone. Due to progressive environmental changes, a larger and broader translation of the changes observed in polar conditions is to be expected in temperate climate environments. I am currently continuing my studies of the variability of the near-surface zone with consideration of hydrological changes based on georadar surveys, boreholes and remote sensing. I am also a contractor in an NCN OPUS grant on critical infrastructure research and monitoring, and a Principal Investigator in a National Science Center of Poland Preludium project on landslide research. I believe that the continuation of my research will provide a better understanding of the issue of environmental change in the Arctic in relation to the increasingly apparent local impact of global climate change and warming. This will hopefully help to protect critical objects that are exposed to the effects of climate change and to improve local crisis management procedures related to critical infrastructures and local societies.
